After a steady first week the World Cup started hurling serious curve balls for punters. Some very handy money was on offer for anyone backing France or the Netherlands, and for the especially brave getting behind Chile or Costa Rica. At the other end of the scale, there are probably not too many tournament brackets left intact after the ousting of Spain and England. Odds have been wobbling on the as yet unconvincing favourites Brazil and Argentina, and all the while young guns Belgium have been completely ignored (more on that later).

We have now started internal testing and will be opening up the platform further to those who have expressed interest in the coming days. The tournament will commence very soon after and again, we urge you to encourage anyone interested to make sure they sign up beforehand to double their starting funds!

The level of odds you see in the market is the result of processing all previously existing information which might influence a given event and includes everything from historical match data to weather. Obviously what then moves those odds is the constant flow of breaking news from internal team politics, to injuries, to, of course mostly importantly, results on the pitch. Those early results have caused hefty odds swings to occur with almost every team in the World Cup Winner odds market except for one.

Belgium has experienced very stubborn inertia in the low 20s since well before the start of the tournament despite being one of the few teams to have won both of their first 2 fixtures and already qualified for the round of 16. This could be to do with the unconvincing nature of their wins, the weakness of their group, performances that have been exactly in line with expectation, or the sticky belief that Belgium are a tier below being genuine title contenders. In any case it gives a useful illustration of a situation where a lot of new information has been completely shrugged off by punters.

The World Cup is heating up with the second round starting June 28th. For that you may be forgiven for overlooking a very interesting Wimbledon draw with at least 4 legitimate contenders and a lot of late money pouring into All England Club legend and fan favourite Roger Federer. As for me? I’ve got one eye on the NBA draft coming up Thursday.

lofty tourism prices have resulted in higher than expected inflation in Brazil during the lead up to the World Cup?

Happy punting,
